Colors of Tokyo /// Day 9 - Yamanote-sen (山手線)

One of my favorite urban photographs thus far is of the Yamanote-sen under a gray Tokyo sky. Looking off a bridge on the upper edge of Yoyogi Park.

Colors of Tokyo /// Day 7 - Character Designs: Crows (カラス)

For another project, the 2D graphics team has been working on several different character designs for an animated series of English language videos for teenagers. The target age falls between late elementary school and junior high. For this reason, it was important to create an appealing design to interest that age group. The following were some of my additions to the project. Similar to an earlier assignment where I was asked to create Character Designs for two Siblings.

Colors of Tokyo /// Day 6 - In the Studio (TBS

The staff at I-Camp were up early Sunday morning preparing for rehearsals. The show I am interning on is called CatChat(キャットチャット). It's an English Language education program for children that is produced in house by TBS. In line with the style of Japanese television, CatChat has a human sized mascot character.

Our 10am rehearsal call time was met by the heads of the production team, our art department, the mascot puppeteers, and the child actors. The mascot puppeteers worked in three to four hour shifts. Their work was made more difficult by the constraints of the costume. It was both heavy and lacked ventilation.

This gives you an idea of the size of the costume head.

Colors of Tokyo // Day 3 - Tokyo Broadcasting Systems (TBS) [英語]

My third day in Tokyo began as my second day with Tokyo Broadcasting Systems(TBS). The standard TBS work day is 10am - 7pm; I caught one of the morning trains on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (東京地下鉄千代田線) towards Akasaka(赤坂). A new train arrives every five minutes. Once the doors close, the smart phones come out. No one talks. The distance between Yoyogi-Ueharaa (代々木上原) and Akasaka(赤坂) is 5.6km - a fifteen minute ride which never runs late.

After downing a miniature latte from the TBS 7-11 store, I was introduced to the CG department of the 6th floor. The technical staff were separated from the animators, who resided across the hall. The environment among the 6th floor staff was reserved and well-managed.

At 12 o'clock, some members of my office took me to a korean food restaurant a few blocks away from our building. Fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English, my internship supervisor ordered the three of us Bibimbap.

The environment in my office is enjoyable. Although much of my job is in Japanese, everyone is extremely patient with me.

Colors of Tokyo /// Day 2 - Yoyogiuehara

As I said earlier--I'm in Japan.

I haven't kept a travel diary since I moved back from Reykjavik, Iceland. Starting a new life from scratch, I would imagine I would have at least sometime to write everyday. In contrast to Scandinavia, living in Tokyo will be a different collection of experiences. I want this journal to serve as a narrative of my trip and chronicle   my reflections on this Tokyo rife.

I arrived in Tokyo with only one suitcase and a bag full of half eaten American candy. I purposely left a majority of my stuff in Los Angeles. I didn't want to have to drag heavy suitcases all over Tokyo in the dead of summer: a 45 minute monorail from Kaneda airport to Emotesando station, a commuter train to Shinjuku station, the confusion and size of Shinjuku station, a commuter train to Asakusa to get my apartment keys, and then yet another commuter train to Yoyogiuehara. All the while worrying about all my stuff being lost, stolen, or damaged. On the other hand, the difference in climate between Los Angeles and Tokyo rendered a lot of my belongings irreverent.

This is a video of my room. The window opens into an enclosed alley way that directly views my neighbor's bathroom. Whoopse!

Colors of Tokyo /// Day 1 - I'm in Tokyo!

To start with, I'm in Japan. I'm working at a company in Tokyo. More like, an "internship" For me, the Japanese language is still super difficult. But, I'd like to get better, so I'll write in Japanese everyday.
On my first day, I tried out the company cafeteria. Being a vegetarian, one can image how eating at a Japanese cafeteria would be challenging. Nevertheless, I took a stab at Japanese cuisine by trying natto for the first time. My initial reaction-- pretty nasty.

Colors of Tokyo /// Unused Character Designs

Before I started my internship in Tokyo, I was asked to create a series of character designs for an animated children's program. Unfortunately, they weren't chosen for the show in the end. Now I get to post them on the internet!
